When Floorboards Go Onto the Wall

Although using floorboards to enhance the wall might sound like a crazy idea, here’s a proof that it actually looks great. I recently saw this flat near Beaminster, Dorset.

Here’s the top floor bedroom. The floor is absolutely gorgeous. You won’t see any of those smelling dusting carpets in this flat. Pure reclaimed wood. What do you do with excess floorboards, you might ask? Well, stick them onto the wall. Why not? The walls near this dormer window follow the floor’s theme and gives a great accent to this semi-rural interior.

The whole interior looks rather sterile as it stands but wait until it is filled with rustic furniture and some wrought iron design goodies. Skirting boards will need to go and there should be a new wooden facing to go on the horizontal beam under the window.

  1. Where do you get reclaimed wood? What a great idea. I just added bamboo flooring to my house and it looks great. I think I like the rustic look of your floors better though.

    Cheers.

    1. Hi Chris, here in England there are so called architectural salvage yards. They got loads of reclaimed material. Alternatively, one can always find something at a joinery or furniture manufacturer. I expect it is pretty much the same in the USA. Just google for salvage yards or leaf through Yellow Pages and phone a few local joiners.

  2. The floorboards on the wall looks very unique. It’s a bit confusing at first glimpse because I was looking for a mirror, but it is actually quite attractive. I’ve seen attics that look very similar to that with small cabinets built into the little areas where the wall and floor meet. I love it.
