Luxury Green Home, Elvido Drive, LA

Green Californian LivingThis is one of the most expensive 3-bedroom homes I’ve seen in my life (you don’t hear that often from a British person, do you :). This Californian luxury green home is being sold for $6.5 million. By the way, another property near Elvido Drive went for $3.5 million just a few weeks ago, and that was a 4-bedroom house. So what do you get for a 3 million premium and is it worth the price?

The most obvious green feature is the 7kW photovoltaic panel on the roof. There is also an alternative solar heater that pre-heats the water for home use. The house has a wonderful water-management system: a 2500-gallon rainwater storage system and a grey-water system.

The ceiling to roof air gap will make sure you keep your air conditioning bills down. Well, don’t laugh – rich people take care of their bills and they generally don’t want to spend more than necessary. That’s one of the reason they’re rich.

Many of the interior features are made from eco-certified bamboo, formaldehyde-free MDF chipboards, hemp and other green materials. Wall insulation is made of recycled clothing. LED lighting and energy saving appliances all through.

You might as well buy a neighbouring house for $3.5 and spend $100,000 to retrofit it with green design elements but that is not exactly the same – this Elvido Drive luxury green home is designed and built in 2007 as an eco-house. For example, it structure is made of insulated concrete forms. It is a lovely, lovely house… only a little too expensive for its floor surface.
