What to Do With Bad Floorboards?

So you’ve got this room with those old floorboards and you don’t like the look of them? What do you do – rip them up? Not necessarily. Firstly, it’s worth checking for signs of rot and woodworms. If the boards are healthy but and you just don’t like the look of them, there are several ways to spruce them up.

The most obvious way is to sand them and apply a couple of layers of varnish or wax. That’s if your floorboards got a beautiful grain. If they’re too knotty, you can do what Danish artist Bjorn Agertved has done with his house.

He’s simply taken white hard-wearing emulsion and painted his floorboards. Please note that the surfaces has to be cleaned and sanded before applying paint and you’ll have to introduce a no-shoes policy at your home to keep the floors as clean as possible.

White floors automatically generate an airy but sterile feel to your interior design. If you want to keep it fun, you’ll have to add bright spots on the walls, colour-rich textiles and other interior design objects to liven it up.

Bjorn has put the accents using his own paintings.

Old floorboards are wonderful. Having natural floors is a privilege, and you’ll have much less dust compared to homes with carpets.

  1. I agree! It looks simple but neat. But I’d rather choose dark paints because the light colors like white can easily show the dust or dirt.
