Reused Wood in Eco Interior Design

The fact that the majority of carpets sold out there is eco/health-unfriendly is commonly known. Still, we cannot kick the old bad habit of decking our floors with that synthetic junk. Look at this gorgeous wooden floor for some inspiration. It is either the original wooden floor or newly laid using reclaimed wood. By applying this unique finish, the designer has achieved a divine feeling. It has been finished with a grainy sandpaper, the cracks and gaps filled with a darkish paste then it is covered in several layers of varnish. But wait, you want an eco floor! Look for a wax based or natural oil based varnish.

There are several tones and options available – glossy, satin or matte. Well, it is a matter of taste but I would say that matte seldom works. The best idea is to take a plank you don’t need and play on it with different combinations. Try applying satin first and then a few layers of glossy varnish. In many cases the result will be much nicer (vintage!) than using just the glossy varnish. By the way, I think this is a vintage HighSmith office chair. They don’t make those any more 🙁 Anyway, thanks to Seesaw Designs for this truly inspirational interior.

Another reused wood example I’d like to show you is this amazing bathroom door. Snapped by Emily Gilbert
and made public by Design Sponge.  The owner has monitored [inline][script]document.write(‘‘);[/script][/inline] for ages to find a good barn door for her Brooklin home. And finally she found one and gave it a new lease of life.

When applying reused wood to your eco interior design, try to keep the grain and enhance the texture. Hiding a wonderful wooden feature behind layers of paint is not always the best thing to do.

  1. Sounds great to have a Eco friendly interior design. Its true that a lot of designers now don’t consider the implications of having artificially created alternatives to the real deal. Typically its the environment that suffers.
