This luxury wooden sink is produced by a Swiss company Ammonitum from specially prepared wooden rings that are glued and pressed together. To achieve water resistance, the sink is dunked in mordant solution and then covered with 10 layers of special varnish. The latter conforms to the requirements set out by the Act of Foodstuffs and Commodities. Making one object often takes 3 months.
Considering the high involvement and expensive sorts of wood that are used to make Ammonitum’s bespoke bathroom objects, the prices are… well, as fantastic as they look. The one pictured is called “Taurus” and retails for around £4,000.
The next sink is a true DIY project and can easily be part of an eco bathroom. It is lovingly hand-made from a large chunk of wood by applying carving and chiselling. It’s quite a lot of work to make a wooden sink like this but the result is well worth it. The finishing is most likely achieved by waxing (must have taken several applications to make it water resistant).
I’m not sure about the source of this image because it was sent to me in an email. I understand that it is from Russia but if you can help me identify it, I’ll be delighted!
If you’re looking for a rustic style but don’t fancy making your own bathroom equipment, here’s a tub-like wooden sink made by laminating wooden bits together and joining them with impressive metal rings.
It is made by a German company called Blumenberg and costs around £400. It is hard to get and apparently their supply network is rather fragmented. Have you spotted a Blumenberg sink anywhere? Please let me know!
