Description

A rare oil painting by a famous Paraguayan artist Jorge Von Horoch. He was one of the most prominent artists of Paraguay and among the top contemporary South American artists.

Jorge Von Horoch was born in 1940 in Asuncion to a Russian father and Paraguayan mother. He received a civil engineering degree from the National University of Asunción, and also continued studies in industrial engineering, surveying and architecture.

It was relatively late in his life that he switched from engineering to painting. Horoch began painting professionally around the age of 30. Although he never received formal art education, that didn’t stop him from becoming the best landscape artist that Paraguay has ever produced.

His first personal art exhibition happened when he was 36 at the El Viejo Galpón gallery in the city of San Bernardino in January 1986. This was followed by a lengthy list of exhibitions both in Asunción and in throughout Paraguay. Later Horoch opened his exhibitions in South America – Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico; as well as in Europe – Spain, Czech Republic, Switzerland and even in the United States. Taiwan and elsewhere.

His sophisticated style and bold use of colours gave him prominence both locally and worldwide. Horoch’s paintings are proudly owned by some celebrity art collectors such as Prince Charles, George Bush, Jimmy Carter, Vyacheslav Lebedev, Roquefeller, Juan Carlos of Spain, Pope John Paul II, and the presidents of Taiwan and Costa Rica. You will be in a good company if you purchase this painting.

Unfortunately, Jorge Von Horoch died in 2016 meaning that his paintings are really scarce.

Subject of this Horoch landscape is Chaco, the Paraguay’s Wild West, which is a unique diverse area both in terms of indigenous inhabitants and natural richness. (Don’t mix with the Chaco National Park in Mexico). During his childhood, Horoch travelled with his parents a lot, including to Chaco. He loved this region a lot. Although Chaco is a wast area with some breathtaking landscapes, not many artists painted there. Paintings of Chaco are rare and very desirable.

Since Horoch had a relatively consistent style during his career, it’s difficult to date this Horoch painting precisely. Judging by the general appearance we estimate this was painted in the 1990s.

Overall great condition but there are some signs of old mould at the back of the picture, which has not affected the front.

This oil painting by Jorge Van Horoch is a great addition to any South American art collection.
