This is an original offset lithograph poster by famous American artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) made for an exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery Novemeber 1st – 22nd, 1975 at 420 Broadway St. New York, NY. The original art poster is titled “Red Horseman Poster”. It was printed in an unknown limited edition, which is not documented. Considering the Leo Castelli Gallery was not particularly big in the 1970s, the limited edition is presumed quite low. Printed especially for an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein’s work The red horseman image featured on the Roy Lichtenstein poster is his 1974 painting “The Red Horseman”
During his career Roy Lichtenstein returned to the topic of horse riders quite often. In 1976 he painted another similar painting titled Horse and Rider. Interestingly, this original painting was just sold in New York for nearly $6,000,000. This is remarkable as it shows that the interest in Lichtenstein’s art is stronger than ever. Owning an original exhibition poster means owning a piece of history. 45 years ago this very poster was hanging somewhere in New York advertising an exhibition of this remarkable artist.
Lichtenstein has often said that his art is actually a reference to other art. Similarly, with this artwork, he makes a bow to the painting ‘Il Cavaliere rosso’ by Carlo Carra – a leading Italian futurist painter – created in 1913.
A slightly reworked edition of this Roy Lichtenstein poster was made next year for the exhibition at Modern Art Pavilion Seattle Art Museum. in January 22nd – March 7th 1976. Then 8 years later in 1984, the same design was reused for the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Size: 57.1cm x 71.1cm (22.5″ x 28″). Very minor edge wear. In a very good condition. Area around one of the corners is slightly uneven, however, this is not water damage. Please see the photo. No creases or folds. The poster has spent most of its life flat in a folder. Sold unframed. Most people don’t want their art posters framed. Please note that this is an original Roy Lichtenstein poster from 1975, offset-printed on thick paper, commissioned and overseen by the artist himself – nothing like the cheap reproductions of Roy Lichtenstein that you can acquire online for £10 or less.
