Whoa, everything seems to be going green lately. Now it’s jewellery’s turn to go green. I’ve just stumbled across banana leaf beads. Made from the dried strips of banana leaf. These banana beads are hand rolled just like the more usual paper beads. You might ask how come I’m now interested in beads? Well, although I can imagine a banana necklace looking good with a certain type of knitted garments, these particular beads are great for interior design. Curtains, textiles and ropes – they’d all go together with these. It’s all made in Africa by small sustainable communities. You can check them here. Also have a look at their recycled beads. It is amazing what you can make from recycled paper and glass.
Recycling and eco-friendly living is something that comes natural for many people in Africa, especially the remote regions. They still live in accordance with the laws of nature and sometimes it takes very little effort to encourage people to approach sustainability as a potential business model. There are many opportunities and eco-friendly jewellery and craft is only one example.
