Reused wood (reclaimed)

Reuse is always better than any sort of recycling or sustainable production. Reused wood is a relatively cheap stuff and a very responsible way of sourcing building materials. You can reuse wood for flooring, kitchen worktops, furniture and in some cases for structural work. You can get reclaimed wood from joineries, special charities (Reuse People, for example) or from your neighbourhood – watch for people demolishing their old houses. Reclaimed wood should be used with caution – make sure the planks are not infested with wood-worms or rot. Take an awl with you when shopping for reused wood – probe the planks from different sides to check that they are not too soft or fragile. Reused wood gives a very special texture and colour effect.
