According to “Hitting the green wall…and beyond”, the report published by the British Property Federation/Taylor Wessing/Spada, investors and developers are yet to be convinced about building green to be a profitable business trend.
The new Government in the UK wants all new residential homes to be green by 2016 and all new commercial properties by 2019.
Although the majority of the UK developers pay attention to the eco-friendly building trends they want a more solid evidence before they risk millions of pounds by introducing zero-carbon methods and materials.
A similar feeling prevails among the builders and real estate investors all around the world even though it is known that eco-friendly houses can be sold for a premium (the USA is a living example of that).
Still, realistically speaking, even if they sell green houses at a premium, their profits will somewhat decline. The closer to 2016 we come the more it hits home that the builders won’t be able to use extra-cheap unsustainable materials (importing things from outside of Europe and that sort of stuff). Where we used to cut corners we’ll have to go straight now.
